Our Story: From 33 Students to Over 6,000
Takoradi Technical Institute (T.T.I.), formerly known as the Takoradi Vocational Training and Trade Promotion Centre, was established in 1982 through a bilateral cooperation agreement between the Government of Ghana and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
From an inaugural enrolment of 33 students, T.T.I. has grown into one of the largest technical institutes in Ghana, serving over 6,200 learners across 20 accredited programmes under the Ghana TVET Service.
Founding
Takoradi Technical Institute (T.T.I.), formerly known as the Takoradi Vocational Training and Trade Promotion Centre, was established in 1982 through a bilateral cooperation agreement between the Government of Ghana and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The partnership was aimed at strengthening technical and vocational education in Ghana by producing a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting the country's industrialisation and economic growth.
The Institute officially commenced operations in October 1982 as a full-fledged technical institution with just three pioneering departments and an initial enrolment of 33 students:
- Mechanical Engineering – 15 students
- Electrical Engineering – 12 students
- Automotive Engineering – 6 students
These modest beginnings laid the foundation for what has become one of Ghana's leading centres of excellence in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Growth
Over the past four decades, Takoradi Technical Institute has experienced remarkable growth in student enrolment, academic programmes, infrastructure, and industry collaboration. From its initial intake of only 33 students, the Institute has expanded to serve a vibrant community of over 6,200 students, offering 20 accredited technical and vocational programmes across diverse disciplines. Today, T.T.I. is widely recognised for delivering quality education in areas such as Building and Construction Technology, Welding and Fabrication, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hospitality and Catering Management, Fashion Design and Technology, Information Technology, and several other industry-focused programmes.
A defining feature of the Institute's success has been its unwavering commitment to integrating theoretical instruction with practical, competency-based training. Since its inception, T.T.I. has maintained strong partnerships with industry to ensure that graduates acquire the technical knowledge, practical experience, and professional attitudes required by employers. This commitment is reflected in the Institute's Workplace Experience Learning (WEL) programme, which provides students with structured industrial attachments and hands-on training through collaborations with manufacturing companies, engineering firms, construction organisations, and major players within Ghana's oil and gas industry, particularly in the Western Region.

Today
The Institute has also continually invested in modern training facilities, workshops, laboratories, and specialised centres to meet evolving technological demands and align with national and international TVET standards. These investments have strengthened T.T.I.'s capacity to produce highly skilled technicians, technologists, and entrepreneurs who contribute meaningfully to Ghana's industrial and socio-economic development.
Today, Takoradi Technical Institute stands as one of the largest and most respected public technical institutes under the Ghana TVET Service, remaining true to its founding mission of providing accessible, industry-relevant, and quality technical education. As it continues to embrace innovation, digital transformation, and emerging technologies, the Institute remains committed to empowering future generations with the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.

1982 — Founding

T.T.I. stands as one of the largest public technical institutes under the Ghana TVET Service, committed to accessible, industry-relevant technical education and Workplace Experience Learning (WEL).
Key Partnerships
T.T.I. partners with industry and development collaborators including facilities such as the Yinson Welding Training Centre, AVIC Engineering Workshops, and the Oil and Gas Training Unit to deliver Workplace Experience Learning (WEL).

- Government of Ghana & Government of Germany — The founding bilateral partnership that established the Institute in 1982.
- Ghana TVET Service — The Institute’s supervising agency, driving quality technical and vocational education nationwide.
- VIS Ghana & AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation) — Through the SEE Project, T.T.I. is receiving ICT equipment, website and digital visibility support, and staff and student capacity building.
- Yinson — Partner behind the Yinson Welding Training Centre, providing industry-standard welding training facilities.
- AVIC — Supporter of the AVIC Automotive, Welding, and Electronics workshops and laboratories.
- Industry & Oil Sector Partners (Western Region) — Host companies for Workplace Experience Learning (WEL), through which 32% of recent graduates secured employment.
- T.T.I. Old Students Association — Alumni supporters whose contributions include the Institute’s main entrance project.
